Bachelor's and Master's Theses

We offer topics for bachelor's and master's theses on a regular basis. While from time to time, we do advertise specific projects below, most of the time, we are trying to identify a suitable subject with the student in a personal conversation. For this, please send an e-mail to Prof. Wressnegger and ask for an appointment.

We will match the student's interests as well as possible with our current research projects. Please, prepare for the appointment with a clear opinion on your interests in the field of computer security. Ideally, you prepare some thoughts on a suitable thesis topic that we can build upon and refine. Our research overview found here might be a good starting point to spark some ideas.

Some examples that have started this way and have even led to conference publications are:

• LaserShark: Establishing Fast, Bidirectional Communication into Air-Gapped Systems (using lasers 😎)
• Aim Low, Shoot High: Evading Aimbot Detectors by Mimicking User Behavior
• Load-and-Act: Increasing Page Coverage of Web Applications

Needless to say, we had tons of fun doing these projects. We firmly believe that only if both sides are comfortable with the chosen topic, the student can perform well and excel oneself. Also, we might even be able to carve out a publication out of your thesis. 😉

Requirements

The most important thing for writing a thesis with us is to be highly motivated and excited about computer security and/or machine learning.

1. If you are interested in a thesis with us and would like to explore your options, tell us about all the awesome things you have done. Also, please provide us with the overview table of your grades.
2. If you propose a topic, convince us in a personal conversation that this is the right fit for you. Show us that you have a clear vision of what you want to do.
3. If you choose one of the topics below, we expect you to have either participated in one of our courses where you did well and have proven yourself, or that you have already worked/gathered knowledge in this field (jobs, spare time, other lectures).
